In contemporary Chinese society, from the individual to the collective, every aspect of our lives has already been digitized. Out of skepticism and reflection on the digital network, I decided to carry out an experiment: in China, where digital life is at its most prosperous, I would attempt a journey entirely cut off from the internet. On November 27, 2023, I shut down all my electronic devices—my phone, computer, and everything connected to the web—and left them at home. I brought only essential clothing, some identification documents, a bank card, and cash. Starting from my hometown of Taiyuan, I set off, traveling across the country by randomly chosen means of transportation. In a society where life at almost every moment depends on mobile phones and internet access, I immediately ran into difficulties: from paying for goods and booking accommodations, to obtaining even the most basic information, not to mention the constant unexpected situations that arose. Without a phone or internet, I was often caught off guard. Yet on the other side of these struggles, I also encountered many unexpected surprises. In the end, over the course of 134 days, I completed a journey across China, experiencing countless unforeseen circumstances, before finally returning home. Returning home also meant returning once again to the world of the internet…
